Heart Symposium 2011 Objectives
The participant will:
- Understand the cardiovascular effects of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
- Learn OSA treatment options and their effects on cardiovascular health
- Classify Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and determine the best treatment strategy based on the current ACC/AHA/HRS guidelines
- Understand the basic mechanism and pathophysiology of AF
- Have a basic understanding of non-pharmacological approaches to the treatment of AF including pacemakers, combination defibrillators and ablative strategies
- Understand the current indications and uses of cardiac CT
- Understand the limitations, risks and benefits of cardiac CT
- Understand the indications and factors considered in patient selection for minimally invasive aortic and mitral valves surgery versus traditional surgery
- Understand the prevalence, incidence and pathophysiology of peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
- Discuss the etiologies and risk factors for PVD
- Review the diagnosis and treatment options of PVD
- Understand differences between systolic and diastolic heart failure (HF)
- Review medical treatment and learn newer HF treatments
- Learn the differences between men and women in the clinical presentation of coronary artery disease
- Learn screening modalities and when to proceed directly to cardiology referral and coronary angiogram
- Be familiar with the present and future use of interventional devices and drugs as used during interventional techniques, understand their relative indications and contraindication and learn possible acute and chronic adverse events and consequences of these agents
- Learn how to explain to patients why interventional devices and drugs are or are not used in a particular patient
